Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Pamban sea bridge, providing rail link between Rameswaram island and the mainland and flagged off the new Rameswaram-Tambaram (Chennai) train service. The bridge is India's first vertical sea-lift bridge, spanning 2.08 kilometers, and includes a 72.5-meter-long vertical lift span that can be raised up to 17 meters, allowing the smooth passage of large ships while ensuring seamless train operations. Built at a cost of over Rs 550 crore, the bridge features stainless steel reinforcement, high-grade paint, and fully welded joints, enhancing durability while reducing maintenance requirements. The bridge is a remarkable blend of tradition and technology.

The Union cabinet on Thursday approved the much-awaited extension of the Kolkata metro with its neighbouring city Howrah, which will include a tunnel under the Hooghly river.The project, estimated to cost Rs 4,676 crore, will connect one of the busiest railway stations of eastern India, Howrah, and the information technology suburb of Salt Lake.

Coal India looks set to achieve its 2024-25 (FY25) production targets. If it can achieve its aim of ramping up Fuel Supply Agreement (FSA) and e-auction volumes, along with cost-saving, evacuation and infrastructure-improvement projects, the company could maintain its momentum as a critical infrastructure and core industry performer. Analysts estimate e-auction volumes of 108 million tonnes (MT) in FY25 and 120 MT for FY26, which is encouraging given the premium of e-auction prices which are consistently over 50 per cent higher than FSA.

A post-mortem examination of two women and a teenage girl found dead in their Kolkata home has confirmed that they were murdered, dismissing initial speculations of suicide. The victims, members of a family facing financial difficulties, were found dead in separate rooms while the male members were involved in a car crash. The autopsy revealed injuries consistent with murder, including slit wrists and poisoning. Police have launched a murder investigation against unidentified persons, suspecting the involvement of the two brothers who claimed the deaths were suicides.
